In addition to its thirteen inpatient beds, MED-1 can be expanded to accommodate 200+ ambulatory patients. Anchored to and extending from the trailer's roof, an awning shelter system fully envelops both MED-1 and its surrounding area. Fluorescent lighting, heating, and air circulation systems serve the full enclosure, while spatial flexibility enables a multitude of configurations.

In a large-scale emergency, the ability to swiftly expand from 13 to 200 beds in less than eight hours is one of MED-1's most remarkable capabilities.
